Elliot Watts on Yeovil Town

 Favourites with caution

Once more the football season is getting ever nearer. With friendlies in full swing around the country, signings being made left right and centre, we felt it be a good moment to give our views on the odds for Yeovil Towns up and coming season

Once again, we find ourselves in familiar territory with the bookies this season, and it doesn’t make easy reading as an YTFC fan, but then again, when in recent seasons has it. I often find it hysterical looking at the odds, how we have stayed as a league 1 outfit for so long, according to the bookies we should have been relegated 3 or so seasons ago, yet we still comeback with fighting spirit, the same fighting spirit that gave us our second best league finish ever last season. Yet again though, we only have to look at betfred to see apparently once again we’ll be heading downwards. http://www.betfred.com/UK/2/betting#action=market-group-list&bo-navigation=11.1,5388.2,5399.2&market-group=546249.2

So, as Yeovil fans, what is this fascination of the public hating us, because we seemed to prove so many times already that we’re going nowhere without a fight. Terry Skiverton and his style of football is not always elegant, it isn’t pretty to watch, but, it’s the kind of football that seems to shock so many other sides we meet. When we get a good team together that gel, and a string of good results, it always seems that other squads can’t seem to dispatch of us. We saw a great example of this at the end of last season, relying on the loan system yes, but a team that felt like a top 5 side, not bottom half, and they showed their fighting spirit, guts and determination to finish in such style like we did. Racking up wins of 5-1 against Leyton Orient, 4-2 vs Peterborough, and who could forget the classic 2-2’s with Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth.

Let not look at the downside of every season that approaches, instead look at the positives of the season before and try to build on those successes that could in time, make us a challenging league 1 outfit. Many of you will read this and question how to look at the positive aspects of last season, when many of our best assets from those months are no longer with us, well, maybe they aren’t, but in this we see a fresh bunch of youngsters, mixed with some more experienced heads that could really gel well, and we’re already seeing these signs.

As Luke put in his previous blog, gaps are being filled, and yes, only time will tell if these fillers have worked, but already we seem to have some decent looking members in our ‘oh so hated’ squad. For example, Kieran Agard looked very pacey, seems to have a real eye for goal, as well as that un-greedy head we need in our team. He looks like the kind of lad many of us would expect to net at least 12-15goals this season. To top this young signing, we have a more experienced and tested one in Gavin Williams, the lad that just keeps coming back (yes, I know we could say this about many a YTFC player lately.) Something feels different about Super Gav this time, he seems more energetic and excitable on the pitch, and added a real buzz with his long balls and exquisite touches last Tuesday.

The reason I’ve looked at these signings, is to say ‘ Yes, we may be favourites to go down, yes most of our own fans might not even look at it with positive glasses, but Terry seems to being doing a master class as a manager with the resources he has, so let’s not write it off yet.’ We’ve done it so many times before, this season is bound to have it ups and downs, but I trust Skivo will do his best to make the ship sail like the Valliant HMS Illustrious, and not sink like HMS Antelope.

Elliot Watts.
